I recently took delivery of my new International SHD rolling tool cabinet. I work as an aircraft mechanic and needed to upgrade to a larger box, but did not want to spend as much as a decent used car. I scoured the internet for reviews on many different brands that allegedly offer good alternatives to the tool truck brands. I didn''t find many reviews on this tool box, but it is the perfect size and has many of the features i was looking for.
There''s only a couple other reviews out there for these "SHD Series" boxes, so thought I''d write a detailed one to help others considering this brand.
The box arrived at Lowes a couple days after the estimated arrival date. It came well boxed with the casters already installed and a pallet built around the bottom of the box around the casters. After removing the cardboard and pallet wood, I began inspecting the box. It arrived in perfect shape without dents or scratches.
I compared the box with some of my coworker''s Snap-On boxes, the following is how it compared.
Steel Gauge: the gauge of the side panels is comparable to the more expensive boxes and appear to be the same gauge as the Snap On. The gauge of the drawers seems about one size thinner, but still decent. The corners came with extruded aluminum protective covers, which was a nice surprise since they are not displayed in the online picture. The top work surface is a 3/4" piece of MDF covered in .020" stainless steel.
Drawers: the drawers are definitely where the box falls short compared to the Snap On boxes. I was surprised to find that none of the drawers had a center reinforcement doubler to prevent bowing. I am not too worried about it, but it might present a problem for diesel mechs with heavy tools. The drawers do not slide as smoothly either. I had to tighten a few of the drawer latch hooks that were very loose, an obvious quality control deficiency.
Paint Finish: Box falls short again compared to others. I''ve known some cheaper boxes to have better finishes, but it''s not terrible.
Casters: the casters are great and the one area where I think this box has an advantage over more expensive brands.
Overall this tool box is 80% as good as the expensive truck brand boxes at 1/3 of the cost, unfortunately I do believe there are better boxes out there in this price range.

Just picked up my 54 inch SHD bottom cabinet by SPG- International, made in QUBEC CANADA. I''m still filling it up and adding to it slowly. This is a life time-one time purchase for me. The handles that came with my unit are chrome plated round with angled ends with 2 tapped holes on each angled end to receive the included 10mm bolts. When i inserted the angled ends into the holes, I quickly learned that there were no drilled holes to receive the bolts. I will have to drill them my self, very carefully. Will check with the company to see if the wrong handles were sent with the unit. Unit rolls extremely easy, brakes on the casters hold unit from moving out of place. Springs on casters will be an added bonus when moving over rough and uneven pavement. This tool cabinet will last, double walled with more steel making the unit weigh in at about 534lbs empty. The drawers pull smooth, and stay where you leave them when open. It has (Safe Latch) on the drawers that hold the drawers closed. This is a great feature not found on a lot of other than the very high dollar units out there. Check out spginternational.com, down load there PDF product guide and choose which line and design best suits your needs. I got a great deal here at Lowes during there 4th of July 40% off sale (Online) that they ran. When I went to the store, they were totally helpful and made sure all paperwork was completed and provided a forklift to load it on my trailer. Once home, uncrating was easy for one person. (Follow the directions on the outside of the box.) I then rolled it into position, started installing the end caps on the drawers with no binding. It has the stainless steel top for a great working surface (Like that). It comes with the thin rubber liners for all 12 drawers, 2 handles w/hardware, drawer end caps, casters pre-installed, and 2 keys. The steel top is covered with a plastic film which if left on will protect the surface longer if not under to much heavy abuse. Thank you International Tool Storage, and Lowes. My search is over.
