Electrical transformers are one of the lesser known, yet essential components for any low voltage cable or track light installation. These small parts perform the crucial task of transferring electrical energy from one circuit to another, and regulating or transforming the voltage to ensure that the appropriate amount of electricity is flowing to the light system. These are essential because, unlike line voltage systems, low voltage lighting uses less power than comes from a conventional 120V household power source. So if the fixture did not have something regulating its voltage, the circuits would overload, making them both non-functional and a safety hazard.
When shopping for transformers, it is important to look at the voltage output of the specific models, as they come in two standard capacities: 12 volt and 24 volt. If you are unsure which of these you need, check the specifications on the fixture that you will be using it with; this should let you know the exact electrical requirements. Additionally, you should ensure that the transformer has a maximum wattage that is greater than the total wattage of whatever fixtures you attach to it.
Note that although all low voltage lighting systems require a transformer, some feature one that is already built in. So, be sure to double check your lighting fixture to see if it actually needs additional components before assuming that it will require a separate part.
