Rope lighting is a versatile and customizable variety of lighting that can be used functionally and decoratively, both indoors and out. Rope lights are particularly versatile because, when bought in large spools, they can be trimmed to custom lengths to perfectly fit your lighting needs.

When installed indoors, this type of lighting is frequently used to provide ambient or accent lighting in places such as under the edges of a countertop, above baseboards, or around the edges of tray ceilings. Rope lighting is also integral to the installation of cove lighting, which provides an ambient glow from behind floating crown moulding or other inset architectural features.

Rope lights for outdoor use are frequently used as decorative and landscape lighting. The flexible shape and durable exterior of these lights make them ideal to be wound around trees or poles, run along the edges of decks, or used to define the border between flower beds and lawns. Of course, like nearly every other type of outdoor lighting, rope lights are also used in outdoor holiday décor. From masses of colored lights in and around trees to light sculptures and animatronics, rope lights can be used to create a holiday wonderland in any yard.

When selecting the right lighting for your needs, you’ll need to choose between incandescent and LED rope lights. The type of bulb that your rope lighting uses will have an effect on the tone of light it projects; Incandescents offer a warmer light, while LEDs generally produce a whiter light that is closer to how natural daylight appears. In addition, the bulb type will affect both the cost of purchase and the cost of operation. LED rope lights are generally a bit more expensive on initial purchase, however, they use much less energy so they will save you more money on your electric bill over time. Also consider that LEDs are generally not dimmable, so if that is an important feature for you, incandescents may be a better choice.
