A lamp shade is an important addition to any lamp. These accessories help create the right quality of light in a space and assist in defining the style of the room, while also customizing the look of the lamp itself.

Lampshades also help determine the amount and direction of the light that a lamp produces. The thickness and material of a shade allows different amounts of light to pass through; they create either a softer more diffused light through a translucent shade or a more directed and bright beam if the lamp has an opaque shade. The shape of the lampshade also helps to define how the light is cast, as different shapes can angle light differently in a space. For example, a shade that is wider at the bottom can project light over a wider area, while a tall and narrow shade might project a dramatic column of light up a wall.

When shopping for the ideal lamp shades for your space, be sure to consider the many options for the shape and size of the shades, as well as their installation style:

  • Shape – The most common type of lamp shade is the traditional bell shape. However, more modern styles such as rectangular, square, and drum shades are also quite popular; these can lend a more updated feel to even older lighting fixtures.

  • Size – As a general rule a lamp shade should be no wider than its lamp is tall, so they come in a range of sizes to complement the variety of different lamps that they can be paired with. These can range from large bold designs intended for floor lamps to petit chandelier lamp shades.

  • Installation Style – When selecting the proper shade for a lamp, it’s important to make sure that it is compatible with the mounting style on the lamp. There are 3 different types of installation styles to look out for:

    •      o UNO fitters – This style is of fitter uses the lightbulb in the fixture to hold the shade in place. These come in both threaded and unthreaded versions which offer different levels of stability.
    •      o Spider fitters – This style of shade sits atop a “harp” which arcs over the light bulb. They are secured by a finial on top of the shade.
    •      o Clip-on – These hold on to the bulb itself with a clip structure. Typically clip on lamp shades are only used on small fixtures or individual lamps on a larger fixture, such as a chandelier.
