Through the heart of London flows the Thames River, a river of history and commerce. There are several bridges spanning its waters, but the most elegant is the Tower Bridge. Opened in 1894, this bridge is famous for its Victorian Gothic style, which was designed to harmonize with the nearby Tower of London. It was the largest bascule bridge of its time; the lower level is constructed of two leaves that can be raised to allow the passage of large ships. Elegant Cornish granite and Portland stone cover the iron structure and the mechanics used to operate the bascules. Two towers support the upper walkways, which were originally designed for pedestrian traffic and provide spectacular panoramic views of the city. From this Landmark the Tower Bridge Passport Collection draws its inspiration.
