A quilt or coverlet is the perfect bedding addition that can give your bed a more polished appearance and add a bright pop of color, a hint of textural interest, or luxurious softness.

As a point of clarity, although they are very similar, quilts and coverlets are technically different types of bedding. There are two main differences between them: batting and length. Batting is the inner layer of fluffy padding that is inside quilts. While quilts come with a range of different types and weights of batting, coverlets don’t have any at all. This makes quilts a warmer and more substantial option, while coverlets are lighter and sleeker. In terms of length, the difference is that quilts are intended to lie on the top of the bed, while coverlets extend all the way down to the floor.

Despite their differences, quilts and coverlets are both common bedding additions that are often used interchangeably. Some of the most popular styles of these include:

Patchwork

This traditional quilting style that was created out of necessity and thriftiness is now loved for its comfortable, laidback style and homey look. While patchwork quilts used to be made from scraps and repurposed worn-out fabrics, they are now more of an art form. With intricate patterns and bright and sturdy materials, modern versions of this quilt style can wow with their geometric flair.

Matelassé

This is a type of close, flat stitching style that gives the impression of quilting without featuring any of the interior padding that a quilt has. Sometimes also called quilted coverlets, matelassé coverlets are frequently made of a light cotton, and are perfect summer bedding additions, as they have a substantial appearance without as much warmth as a quilt.

Kantha Quilts

These light and colorful additions are inspired by east Asian textiles that are created from repurposed saris and cloth scraps. These are layered and quilted to create a versatile and cheerful kantha quilt that can serve just as well as a bedspread, throw, tablecloth, or cushion.
