Bennett Leifer

Raised in New York, Bennett Leifer was exposed to Fine Art, Architecture and Interior Design from a young age. As a child growing up in Great Neck, Long Island-the same region that inspired the Great Gatsy-Leifer was most captivated by the architecture and design of the Art Deco area. He studied Art History and Business at Skidmore College, which helped him develop both an artistic eye and a thorough understanding of the business side of design. For over a decade, he has worked on projects of all sizes, scope and style and has experience working in high-end residential interior design and at architecture firms.

In August of 2013, Bennett started his own company with Bennett Leifer Interiors is New York based, specializing in bespoke interior spaces for private residences and developers.

In March 2015, Bennett was featured in House Beautiful's "Next Wave" as one of their young designers to watch. In May 2015, Traditional Home featured Bennett as one of their "Rising Stars of Design". He has since been a featured designer at the 2015 Kips Bay Decorator Show House, a recipient of the "2015 Stars on the Rise" award by the Design and Decoration Building as well as the "2015 Rising Stars of Design" by the International Furnishings and Design Association. Bennett has also appeared in publications including Elle Décor, Luxe, 1stdibs Introspective and Departures Magazine.

Bennett Leifer is known for his aesthetic that features layers of texture to create luxurious, sophisticated and sometimes whimsical rooms. Leifer believes that designers should avoid imposing too much of their own taste in their clients' homes, and instead focuses on making his clients comfortable. This week, Bennett Leifer brings his comfortable yet refined style to this weeks' 52 Weeks of Design. Make sure to check out his personal picks to get his aesthetic in your home!

Room Designed by Bennett Leifer

I am so fortunate to do what I love, and I recognize that working with a family on the design of their home is a huge honor that should not be taken lightly. I draw inspiration from my clients: who they are, how they live and how they want to live. I am respectful of the architecture of the space and environmental setting. I look at these elements as puzzle pieces and fit them together in a way that makes sense to me, and aim to achieve an environment that is both thoughtfully elegant and accessibly inviting.

Questions and Answers

Q: "What's the best advice you ever received?"

A: "Measure twice, cut once."

Q: "What is the easiest way to transform a room?"

A: "Accessories: namely books, flowers, pillows and small objects like candlesticks. I learned this in photographing my projects, it is incredible what a different feeling a space has when you layer in small beautiful items."

Q: "What makes you feel comfortable in someone else’s guest room?"

A: "A well-appointed closet. I like to unpack upon arrival and get organized. A luggage rack, ample hangers and shelving help make me feel right at home."

Q: "What's the first thing you do for a client?"

A: "Communication and clarity are so important for having a successful relationship. The first thing I do for a client is a scope of work document/project budget. It helps us get on the same page as to how extensive the project will be, what our timeline looks like and what type of investment we will be making. I find that initially identifying these items leads to a much happier working arrangement."

Q: "What's something you'd never tell a client?"

A: "'No'. We are in a luxury industry, and my clients need to feel like they are my top priority and that anything is possible. I try always make their requests feasible, or at least provide attractive alternatives."
