52 Weeks of The Whole House - Alexa Hampton

Alexa Hampton

A bit about Alexa

Alexa Hampton assumed ownership and design leadership of the world-famous firm Mark Hampton LLC in 1998, which was founded by her father in 1976. Since then, she has completed a wide range of designs for domestic and international projects, from New York City to Hangzhou, China, including apartments and large residential properties.

Entryway by Alexa Hampton

This room is the first-floor hallway of a beach house. This client wanted to buck the tradition of complete informality that is so common in beach houses, and she hoped for a more beautiful and formal space. We have fetishized our client’s love and collection of blue porcelain and mixed it with formal elements. Though we wanted to dress this room up, we made sure not to go too far. For example, we have relieved the furniture from its role of being overly formal by using mostly painted pieces. Conversely, we have taken a sweet, cozy ottoman and elevated it by using velvet. Historically, velvet is a “no no” at a beach house, but we felt free to do whatever we wanted based upon the client’s boldness and design brief.

Lastly, because this is a long hallway, we were able to create different areas and singular vignettes. The main event is at the base of the stairs where we have a beautiful console anchoring the space. We also have satellite elevations, such as the one with the bench and four paintings that is both functional and visually interesting.

Shop the look

There are two perfect approaches to the entry hall. One is to present it as a thesis statement of what you will be seeing throughout the house. The other is to treat the foyer as if it's a jewel box that creates wonder.

Designer Q&A

What's the secret to your success as a designer?

After talent and training, which has to come first for any designer, no less important is my desire to make my clients happy and to get them what they want and need.

Tell us about a favorite recent project of yours?

I recently worked on an enormous and beautiful house in the south of France for an equally incredible couple. The whole experience felt very once-in-a-lifetime for me and my French got so good!

The Whole House

The Whole House

The Whole House is an extension of our previous years, 52 Weeks of Design. It is a collaboration of designers that will design every room of a house. A new room will be featured by a new designer, every week, for 52 weeks. Be sure to come back and check out the new rooms.
