When warm weather comes your way, few things can provide as much relief from the heat as a home air conditioner. Air conditioners are available in multiple options including window mounted, wall mounted, and portable air conditioners, so regardless of your home’s configuration, there are cooling options that can bring a chill to your space.

Some important factors to consider when choosing an air conditioning unit for your home are what kind of plug and voltage a unit requires (a standard wall outlet is 115-volts), what size window or ingress it needs, if any, and how big your space is. Clearly the electric and installation space requirements are important as basic specifications to make sure that the unit can fit and function properly, but things can get a bit more complicated when looking at the size of a room and how much power you need to cool it down.

The cooling capacities of air conditioners are measured in BTUs, or “British Thermal Units,” which tell you how large of an area the unit can cool. This area cooled is given in the standard square feet, which you can easily calculate by multiplying the length of your space by the width. The BTUs of different units can range quite dramatically, from as little as 5,000 BTUs to 24,000. Typically the BTU recommendations for spaces are as follows:

• 100 - 350 square feet = 5,000 - 8,000 BTUs needed

• 350 - 550 square feet = 9,000 - 12,000 BTUs needed

• 550 - 1,000 square feet = 12000 - 18000 BTUs needed

• 1,000 - 1,800 square feet = 24,000 BTUs needed

For a more detailed list of square footages with their corresponding BTU requirements, as well as the answers to a couple other air condition questions, you can also check out our Air Conditioners FAQ article.
