Soaking tubs are the most popular style of bathtub, providing a simple and reliable option that offers relaxation without the distraction of any bubbles, jets, or excessive features. When choosing the ideal soaking tub for your space, there are a few different factors to take into consideration. Some of the most important are the size of you space, the installation type you need, and the type or shape of tub that you would like to install. The size of your space is the most important consideration, just because the installation that you pick needs to be able to fit comfortably and proportionally in your space without crowding. In terms of different soaking tub installations, there are a range of options to suit whatever space you are outfitting. The main styles of installation include alcove tubs, drop in tubs and freestanding bathtubs:

  • Alcove tubs are intended to fit in standard sized shower alcoves with walls on three sides of them. These are typically the most utilitarian type of soaking tub, offering the perfect size and shape to act as a shower/bath combination.
  • Drop in tubs , as the name would suggest, are designs that are intended to be simply dropped in to a premade enclosure or surround. These make for a versatile installation type that can be installed in any location in the bathroom that you construct the surround.
  • Freestanding tubs are a beautiful and functional installation that can offer the luxury of a large soaking tub that functions independently of any shower installation. These pieces are frequently centerpieces in the bathrooms they are installed in, taking center stage and defining the style for the rest of the space.

The shape and type of soaking bathtub can also have a large effect on both the functionality and the visual impact of the bath. Some of the most popular shapes and types include rectangular and oval tubs, walk in tubs, and corner tubs, among others.

  • Rectangular or oval bathtubs are typically the standard shapes. These tubs are an ideal shape for reclining, and are available in every installation type. These are relatively neutral in design and can easily be at home in bathrooms of any style.
  • Walk in tubs are non-traditionally shaped tubs that are taller and feature a waterproof door in the side that can open to allow the bather to simply walk in to the tub, rather than stepping over a side. These will usually include a built in seat that lets the bather sit upright while they soak, rather than reclining. Walk in tubs are excellent options for those who may have joint problems or want a simple way to soak without the risk of slipping and falling as they climb in and out of the bath.
  • Corner bathtubs are usually a rounded triangular shape that comes in a drop in installation style. They can be a nice option to add a large soaking tub in a space that might not otherwise be used. This makes corner tubs feel like they take up less space, even though they can be quite substantial installations.
  • Other shapes include round, square, kidney shaped, and tear drop shaped, among a range of other more unique forms.
